Sew Over It – Silk Cami

In December the lovely ladies at Fabric Drop sent me some luscious cherry silk rayon fabric. If you haven’t heard of Fabric Drop you should check them out! They are an online fabric, pattern and findings store. The owners are two sisters Claire is based in Invercargill New Zealand (at the bottom of the South Island) and Lucy is based in Parkes Australia. My orders have always arrived within a week. They are beautifully packaged with lovely handwritten notes. When you order from Fabric Drop use a postal address rather than a courier address as they send via their packages via post.

FabricDrop have also generously offered a discount code for you to use, so keep on reading to find out more!

I chose the Sew Over It  Silk Cami pattern to match with my fabric. I shortened the pattern length originally by 2 inches. A) to get all the pieces out of my length of fabric and B) the length looked really long on me.

I don’t normally wear this colour but this fabric spoke to me and I NEEDED it! I had 1.5 meters of this fabric which is the perfect amount for a tank. It is a narrow fabric 112cm so make sure you order enough!

The image above shows the length of the top with 2 inches removed. At this point, I decided to straighten the hem to the length at the side of the top.

20180107_201437In the view of trying to give an honest review of the pattern, I followed the pattern instructions closely. I was surprised that Sew Over It didn’t recommend understitching the facings instead it told you to press the facing down. Without the understitching, it was impossible to get a clean finish. If I make this pattern again I would follow the burrito method for sewing the facing and not sew french seams down the sides. Otherwise, the instructions are simple to follow.

I’m really happy with my finished top mainly due to the awesome fabric rather than the pattern. I’m thinking about trying the Grainline Willow next time I’m making a tank.
