I recently rediscovered the Lara dress by Schnittchen patterns. I loved this pattern when it was released in our winter a few years back. It never managed to get onto my ‘to sew’ list until I found it again recently. I love un-fussy designs with unique details similar to the garments seen at COS.

It’s summer here in New Zealand and we’ve been enjoying lots of ocean swims and warm days. It feels so healing after 2021. I wanted some bright summery dresses – since the last few summers have been bleak my wardrobe has been lacking happy, colourful dresses.

The Lara Dress pattern is a wide cut, slightly A-shaped flared summer dress with side inseam pockets and a plunging V-neckline with trianglar notches. The neckline is framed by wide facings that overlap at the centre front. The two lapels of the front-facing are as much a refined detail, as the sewn-on cap sleeves. Lara can also be sewn as a blouse, with 3/4 sleeves or without sleeves.

My dress is a size 42 in cotton with some spandex which I purchased from FabricBox. The pattern requires approx 2.7 meters. It would have been less if I didn’t match the print. This fabric was not the best choice for this pattern! Schnittchen patterns recommend linen fabrics, lightweight cotton or poly viscose.

Changes to the pattern:

• I removed with 2 inches removed from the center back to give myself a bit more shape.
• Shock horror: I removed the pockets! I was worried the fabric would collapse from the extra weight.
• I added a tie belt which is sewn at the centre back.
• I cut 3 inches off the hem (next time I’d do a bit more!)
• Hand sewed the front opening closed from the underside.

On a plainer fabric, a button would make a nice feature. I normally need a full bust adjustment but I didn’t with this pattern because of the generous ease. I added an extra inch to my sleeves as I have strong arms!

Schnittchen patterns have been quite quiet in the past few years but I like their patterns. They have some great designs that are well priced with interesting details. Some of their instructions are a bit questionable but if you use Style Arc or Burda patterns you’ll be fine!

When I first went onto the site a pop up invited me to join their mailing list, I entered my details but they didn’t connect with the 50% off first pattern purchase that I was offered. Undeterred I paid full price.

Hopefully more people make this pattern. It has some great design details and I’d love to see how other designers use the pattern.
