Paul and I have been joking about making him a male romper for a while now. When I saw this fabric on Drapers Instagram I offered to make him a fun outfit for the summer festival season.  The fabric is a lovely lightweight cotton perfect for summer.

I decided that a two piece set was much more practical for a number of reasons. Including sewing, going to the bathroom and that both garments can be worn as individual pieces.

I ordered 2.5 meters of 145-centimetre wide fabric knowing that I would make a short sleeve shirt and shorts. Drapers don’t have this fabric in stock anymore but they have lots of lovely fabrics listed on their website.

I used McCall’s 6044 which I used previously used to make his button-down shirt blogged here.  I shortened the sleeves 1 inch from the short sleeve template and shortened the hem by 3 inches.

To make the shorts I used the Hudson pants pattern and shortened the length of the hem. I cut a size larger than Paul’s regular Hudson pant size as this pattern is designed for knit fabrics with considerable stretch. This pattern is really quick to make and is great as a short pattern. Next time I will make the pockets a bit deeper.

To strengthen the seams I topstitched all the seam allowances down. I also added bartacks to the insection point of the pocket and the side of the pants.

This was a fun outfit to make and I love how Paul looks in it. He said it’s the best thing I’ve ever made him and he has received lots of compliments. I’m planning to make a few more sets for him to wear over the summer. We just need to find the right fabrics!
