I have been meaning to make a luxurious robe for a while. Somehow it became one of those projects which ended-up at the bottom of my ‘to sew’ list.

When Helen from Helen’s Closet asked me to test her Suki Kimono I jumped at the opportunity! I could finally make the robe of my dreams!

I’m a fan of Helen’s two other patterns. I’ve made the Windslow Culottes last summer and tested her Blackwood Cardigan.

The Suki Kimono is described by Helen as a luxurious and comfortable robe, perfect for everyday use.

The pattern wraps around the body and has inner and outer ties to keep the robe closed. The outer ties are sewn to the back of the robe so they will never get lost. It also has pockets which are handy if you are like me and you always have your hands full.

The sleeves are the perfect length for doing dishes and making coffee.

This version is the shorter length of the two, I removed a further 2 inches from the hem, for your reference I’m 165cm tall. The main fabric is cotton twill with lovely drape. I used a red linen for the front band and kimono sleeve bands. I knew I wanted a contrasting fabric and debated about what fabric to use for the waist tie. I went with the cotton as it is softer.

This version is size large. The size range is XXS to XXL.

I was planning on sewing french seams throughout but didn’t due to time restrictions. Instead most of the seams are flat felled and the side seams are overlocked.

If you did want French seam your Suki In The Folds has a great French inseam pockets tutorial. The area to watch out for when sewing French seams on your Suki is the underarm. Flat felling or overlocking is the best option.

Another option is to French seam the side seam and sleeves separately, then set your sleeves the traditional way.
